Saturday 21st of February at 7pm sees Dr Nigel Metcalfe come to the Observatory. **5 PLACES STILL AVAILABLE as at 4pm friday 20th** Also there is a comet in the sky too!!! see it at this event (weather permitting) Dr Metcalfe is a research scientist who works on discovering galaxy clusters and their properties. He will present a talk on an exciting new project called "Pan Starrs". This project will aim to survey the whole sky spying on events that change or move in the night sky, events such as "super novae" or "transiting planets" or maybe even a comet! Hear Dr Metcalfe explain how this superb new project will work and how it could have implications for the Kielder Observatory....Afterwards we will open the observatories up to look at the night sky...there is a comet to be seen too! it is faint but we will be able to see it if clear..then have a warm in front of our log burning fire and have a warm coffee before heading off home... We are pleased to announce that we have secured one of the leading researchers in cosmology. Professor G Gilmore from Cambridge uniiversity, who is a professor of experimental philosophy has agreed to come and speak for us as part of our support programme for IYA 2009. A superb speaker, Prof Gilmore will be able to explain how we have this physical universe from what was nothing. How time and space were created simultaneously across the whole of the infant universe and how the universe may end!!!! All of these questions can be answered at this event by a world leading expert. Normal prices will apply, bookings being taken now so please book early so as not to miss out. The talk is scheduled for Saturday 18th April 2009 at 8 pm. |

Kielder observatory is pleased to announce its involvement in this memorable event. To celebrate 400 years since Galileo observed the moon and 40 years since man walked on the moon. A huge collaboration is underway to involve and interest the public in astronomy. IYA 2009 will be delivering a number of events, at this observatory we will be hosting talks by professional astronomers aimed at describing our universe and its evolution through time , stopping at concepts and giving an explanation along the way.
