A new observatory under construction at Kielder will allow astronomers and amateur stargazers to make the most of some of the darkest skies in Britain.
Nothing sounds quite as romantic as spending a night under the stars – at least that's what I thought on my way to Kielder to spend a night at the fifth Kielder Forest Star Camp. It's a pity I forgot about the English weather!......

Surrounded by forest and close to the Scottish border, the Northumberland village of Kielder is said to be the most remote community in England. Not surprising then that it's become a popular spot for walking and mountain biking. But its isolation from large towns and cities means also the area is blessed with skies that are relatively free from light pollution. That's encouraged amateur astronomers to head for Kielder in their hundreds. They gather every April and October for the so-called Star Camps. And the village's growing reputation as a centre for astro-tourism has led to the building of a new observatory, at the cost of around four hundred and fifty thousand pounds. It opens at the end of this month. Our reporter Luke Walton went to Kielder to meet some of the enthusiasts behind the project....
